WD announces new SSDs for Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and more handheld PCs

Today, WD has announced a new lineup of 2230 size M.2 NVMe SSDs, intended for use in handheld PCs, Microsoft Surfaces, and more. The drives in the new SN770M line are PCIe gen 4, and as such WD is advertising read/write performance in the neighborhood of ~5 GB/s in each direction.

Capacities range from 500 GB to 2 TB, with pricing starting rather high but not ridiculously so. The 500 GB clocks in at $75, the 1 TB at $110, and the 2 TB at $220.

Endurance is solid. WD warranties these drives at a flat 600 TBW per TB, so the 2 TB drive falls right in line with Handheld PC’s pick for your next internal storage upgrade. We still recommend our pick from that article over this new SN770M, given the now even lower $165 price for 2 TB and functionally identical speeds in your Steam Deck.
